Medication safety basics

How to take, store and refill your medication safely — and how to spot fake drugs in Nigeria.

Medication bottles, tablets and a weekly pill organizer

Taking medicine the right way matters as much as the medicine itself. Wrong doses, missed refills, or fake products can turn a simple problem into a serious one. Here's what every Nigerian household should know.

Take it as prescribed

Finish the full course of antibiotics, even if you feel better. Stopping early lets bacteria survive and grow stronger — this is one reason antibiotic resistance is a growing crisis in Nigeria.

  • Don't share prescriptions with family or friends
  • Don't double-up if you miss a dose — take the next one as scheduled
  • Use a phone alarm or weekly pill organiser for chronic medication

Check for fake drugs

NAFDAC estimates a meaningful share of medicines in informal markets are substandard or counterfeit. Buy only from registered pharmacies, check the NAFDAC number, and use the SMS Mobile Authentication Service (MAS) — scratch the panel and text the code to the number on the pack.

Store medicines properly

Keep most drugs in a cool, dry place — not the bathroom (humid) or on top of the fridge (warm). Insulin, some antibiotics and certain eye drops need refrigeration. Always check the leaflet.

Watch for interactions

Tell every doctor and pharmacist about every medicine, supplement, or herbal remedy you take. Common combinations to flag: blood thinners + painkillers, blood pressure drugs + 'cold and flu' tablets, herbal mixtures + chronic medication.

Dispose of old medicines safely

Don't flush medication or throw it loose in the bin. Return expired or unused drugs to a pharmacy if possible, or seal them in a bag with coffee grounds or sand before discarding.
